Choreography

I like to begin choreographing a piece by sitting in the sun and listening to the music interact with the world around me. Dance that exists within a bubble of itself without motivation, emotional release, or storytelling is simply glorified walking. I want my choreography to be purposeful, engaging, and to reveal a part of our inner world that cannot be described by words.
My two favorite styles of dance to choreograph for are musical theatre and contemporary. Musical theatre has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I enjoy bringing the energy, stories, and community that it provides to life with dynamic movement and “leave your heart on the floor” performances. Contemporary dance allows me to tell those same stories through unique movement styles, raw emotional outpour, and ways of dancing that feel great in the body.
Something that I am very passionate about within the dance and theatre communities is breaking down the idea that intimidation is the only way to grow. Dance calls, auditions, rehearsals, and classes to name a few are all areas within the industry where an unhealthy power dynamic between teacher and student is not only accepted, but encouraged. I pride myself on creating open, brave spaces in both audition settings and rehearsals where actors feel encouraged to come to me with questions, concerns, and ideas. I bring in the ideology and skills that I have gained through teaching artistry into traditionally tense environments to allow actors to feel comfortable, confident, and cared for.
